There is a statewide initiative to improve health awareness among employees of the state. Basically, we get $100 if we fill out this online health survey and then get a biometric screening. I did my screening today.

Blood Pressure: 109/78 (Ideal is below 120/80.)
"Bad" Cholesterol: 151! (Should be under 200. The last time I got it done, maybe 3 yrs ago, it was 199.)
"Good" Cholesterol: 49 (Should be over 40.)
Glucose: 85, non-fasting. (Should be under 140.)

The dude who went over my results with me tried to throw me some shade about BMI and I was like, "Yeah, okay, whatever." Fat =/= inherently unhealthy and I consider my numbers Cold Hard Proof. I mean, supposedly I am OBESE which always makes me think Obtuse Beast. Fuck that! My body is THE BOMB.

awesome numbers :)

my second-to-last employer did a similar screening (for the same $100, as a visa gift card, and then as insurance premium discounts the following years), but it ended up resulting in a shit ton of harassing (by my standards) mail and telephone calls trying to get me to enroll in these programs to improve my "issues" -- since i'm fat, they wanted me to do diet and exercise programming, since my total cholesterol is high, they wanted weight loss programming (whcih was apparently separate, and nevermind the fact that my bad cholesterol was acceptable and my good cholesterol was acceptable and while the total was high, the overal lipid panel was outstandingly awesome), and because i'd put down i had a previous bout with emotional issues, they wanted to give me support group information and shit. i was getting about 5 letters every two weeks, and one or two phone calls a week for awhile. it was out of control!

so if you end up getting harassed like that, tell them you didn't sign up for that part of the deal and get yourself off the mail/call list :)

Actually, the harassment has not been bad. I get a couple of postcards in the mail inviting me to work out at this place... but no calls or anything.

It has been totally worth the dollars.

Yeah! That rules! Your body sounds (and LOOKS, I might add) fine to me. heh. Eff them and their "obesity" fearmongering.

holler for a dollar! (or $100 of them)

don't let them toss you any nonsense - you're obviously healthy. and hot hot hot to boot.

I, on the other hand, am actually terrified to have my cholesterol tested because it was so high the last time I did. hmm... avoidance is probably not the way to achieve good health.

Monies! I will not let them buy my guilt for $100, no way. I was like, "Thanks, dude! Sounds like I'm great! SEE YA!"

I am always nervous about cholesterol. It is high all over my family. I'm a sitting duck.

When I was in maybe the 10th grade our health teacher said if you can pinch more than an inch of skin on the back of your upper arm, you are obese.

That was 10 years ago and I still never forgot that.

That is so messed up. Why would grown-ups want to teach kids to loathe their bodies?

I hate when doctors say, "Well, you look good on paper..."

I know! He was almost looking at the numbers like he didn't believe them... and he was trying to show disapproval, kinda, even though there wasn't much to disapprove of!

Ha, exactly. Then they pull out the old, "But we don't know how these numbers will look 10 years from now..."
